Once your student has submitted his or her housing application and has been admitted to OU, we will send an e-mail to your student's OU e-mail address. The e-mail will contain a link to the freshman Housing and Food Services contract. If your student is an upperclassman, once we have received and processed their application, we will then hard copy mail a contract to the students permanent address. |
|
The housing contract is a nine-month contract. If a student is new at OU in the spring semester, the contract is for that one semester. Separate contracts are available for those taking summer classes.
|
|
|
Students are encouraged to reserve a room earlier rather than later. The more quickly the following steps are completed, the more likely a student will be assigned the room type and roommate preferences he or she requested. To reserve a room, the student must be admitted to the university and have completed ALL of the following steps:
- Complete and return the application to Housing and Food Services along with the $30 Housing and Food Services application fee
- SIGN and return the Housing and Food Services contract
- PAY(or arrange to defer) the $175 Housing and Food Services advance payment.
The $175 payment is refundable if Housing and Food Services receives a written cancellation prior to June 15 (for fall semester occupancy) or Dec. 15 (for spring semester occupancy). If applying for financial aid, the student must still pay the $30 application fee, but may postpone the $175 advance payment by notifying Housing and Food Services of the potential financial assistance.

Regents’ policy requires that all single, freshman students who are younger than 20 years of age, who do not have at least 24 hours of college credit, or who have not lived in university residence halls for at least two semesters live in a university residence hall for one academic year. Exemptions from this policy may be requested if a student is living with a parent within 50 miles, married, or has a special circumstance warranting the exemption. Any questions regarding this process, please contact Debbie Wells at (405) 325-1284.
|
|
First, the 24 hours should not include advanced standing, CLEP or concurrent enrollment. The student must have attended college in residence. If all of those requirements are met, a student must still complete and submit an exemption application form.
|
|
Yes, fill out an exemption application form. A parent must sign the exemption form and have it notarized.

Roommates are assigned on the basis of year in school according to preferences indicated on a student's housing contract.
Students may request a specific roommate on their contract. We try to honor all mutual-roommate requests, but we must receive them by June 15. Roommate requests received after that date might not be honored. Please note that both students must request the each other as roommates on the Housing and Food Services contract to be assigned as roommates. Freshman students who are not mutually requesting a roommate may participate in the Online Roommate Matching Questionnaire. Once we have received and processed the Housing and Food Services contract, an e-mail will be sent to the student's OU e-mail account with a link to the online form. The preferences indicated by your student through the online questionnaire will be used to assign roommates. |
|
Roommate conflict can cause stress!
Encourage your student to share their concerns with their Resident Adviser (RA). Our RAs are well-trained in roommate conflict. If your student does not feel his/her concerns are resolved, please encourage them to contact their Center Coordinator. We have a variety of options from peer counseling to enabling students to change rooms. We are eager to facilitate meaningful communication and help develop lasting problem solving skills with all of our residents.
|
|
Students should visit the main housing office in Walker Center, Room 126 to pick up a request form. E-mails will be sent granting or denying any room change requests within one week of being received.

Tower rooms have suite-style bathrooms. Typically, four people share a bathroom and the responsibilities of cleaning it. The Quads have community-style bathrooms. However, a housekeeper cleans community bathrooms on a daily basis.
Each room is furnished with two twin beds, desks and study chairs. In addition, Expanded Basic Cable TV is provided in each residence hall room. All facilities are smoke free and convenient. Within the residence halls are such dining options as Burger King, Taco Mayo, Block and Barrel Deli, and Couch Restaurants. The Huston Huffman Physical Fitness Center also is located near the residence halls for easy student access.
With the exception of super suites, residence hall rooms house one or two students each. Each student has direct Internet access in the room through direct connections to the university’s networking backbone. Each student will need an Ethernet card in his or her personal computer. Also, wireless internet is presently available in Adams and Couch Centers. Students who do not have computers may use the 24-hour computer labs available on-site. The university provides students with a flexible OU e-mail account. The HUB, www.hub.ou.edu, is students’ primary electronic link to the campus community.

Residence Life staff consists of resident advisers (RAs), programming assistants (PAs), resident directors (RDs) and center coordinators (CCs). The RAs are carefully selected live-in student staff members who have primary responsibility for guiding and advising residents. The RDs and PAs, who also live in the housing centers, report directly to a center coordinator. Their responsibilities include providing leadership in a housing area, coordinating daily administrative and maintenance activities, assisting in the advisement of hall government, and participating in program development. Each of the five University housing areas has its own Center Coordinator to oversee and assist the officers of the center’s student government in planning housing and center functions, supervises RAs and the RD, and is responsible for the general administration of the center.

Year-round housing is available to students. The residence halls do not close for Thanksgiving or Spring breaks. Temporary housing during holidays may be available on a limited basis through Housing and Food Services for a nominal fee.

Courtesy phones are available for use on each hallway of each floor within the residence halls. Long-distance requires either a personal long distance billing code that is obtained through the University’s Information Technology department or via a pre-paid calling card that students can purchase at most convenience stores.
In order to
activate your OU telephone account, you must sign up for a long
distance code, even if you do not plan on utilizing any long distance
services. You are invited to stop by the IT booth during Sooner
Orientation to sign up online. The rate for student telecom accounts is

Quiet hours are observed in all houses/floors at the following times:
Sunday through Thursday: 9 p.m.-11 a.m.
Friday and Saturday: midnight-11 a.m.
Visitation hours are observed on Freshman houses/floors at the following times:
Sunday through Thursday: 11 a.m.-midnight
Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m.-2 a.m.
Housing and Food Services reserves the right to alter visitation privileges of students who fail to observe the visitation rules. Only those co-educational houses/floors comprising 100 percent upperclassmen have 24-hour visitation privileges. All security doors are locked by 10pm every night of the week.
Students of the opposite sex are prohibited from using shared bathrooms in the Towers and the applicable community baths in the Quads.
|
|
Residents may receive citations from either the Resident Advisers or the Community Service Officers (CSOs) for violations of the Housing Handbook rules and regulations. Examples of these citations include violations of the visitation hours or possession of items prohibited in the residence halls. You could equate this citation to a speeding ticket. There is an appeals process that students can go through if they believe they were unfairly cited.
The office of Judicial Services handles all of the judicial process; this discipline process is handled by Judicial Services Advocates and is only for those students who violate the Student Code regulations while within Housing. The Judicial Services Advocates serve a prosecutorial role during the disciplinary proceedings. The Judicial Services Advocate protects the University's interests as they ensure the students are aware of their mistakes and pay restitution. One example of a violation which would cause a student to enter the disciplinary proceedings would be if they actively participated in vandalism of University Property.

The University of Oklahoma assumes no financial responsibility for damages to, or loss of, the personal property of students. The University of Oklahoma departments of Housing and Food Services and Risk Management collectively recommend that students check their parents’ homeowner’s insurance policy to see if their personal items would be covered in the event of damage while living in a residence hall or an on-campus apartment at the University of Oklahoma. If a student is not covered by his or her parents’ homeowners insurance or if they wish to purchase additional coverage exclusively for the student, he or she may check with any general insurance agency for details on securing such insurance. These companies can be located by checking your local phone book. Other options are listed below in no particular order and without any implied recommendation by the University of Oklahoma. We have no “preferred” vendor.”
